05 May Denim Styles Explained
Jeans have become staples in our closets – from casual, work, nights out, or travel there are denim styles for every occasion. We’ve rounded up some of the most popular denim silhouettes and how to style them.
Bootcut
Bootcut jeans are slim through the hips and thighs and have a slight flare at the hem. This flattering style balances curves for round figures and creates curves for straight figures. Bootcut jeans are often a great option for petite women because the fuller leg opening is proportional to small frames. Originally designed to fit over a heel, these jeans pair well with heels or boots to elongate your legs.
Flare
Similar to bootcut jeans, flares are slim through the hips and thighs but have a wider flare at the hem. The degree of flare varies- from slightly wider than a bootcut to very wide for a dramatic look. The key with flares is to not lose the shape by letting excess fabric of a 34” inseam drag on the floor. Show off the flattering shape by elongating your leg line with platform shoes, heels, wedges, or boots.
Bonus Tip: If you love a bootcut or flare look, but feel the style is too overwhelming for your frame – try a cropped version! Cropped styles can be paired with flats or heeled shoes which allows you to style them with ease.
Boyfriend
Boyfriend jeans often have a straight cut in the hips and have a loose, baggy fit in the thighs and legs. You can go true to size for a slimmer, polished look or size up for a relaxed, broken in look and feel. Some brands even have a slimmer fit, typically known as a girlfriend jean. This relaxed style is perfect for casual looks, but can also be dressed up with a chic blazer or jacket. The cropped length of the jean allows you to pair them with heels or flats.
Straight
Straight jeans are a straight cut from the hips to the ankles creating a long, slimming leg line. Straight jeans are a great option when you are looking for a slim cut, but want an alternative to skinny jeans. Universally flattering for slim or curvy figures, it is an especially great choice if you want to play down your hips. The straight cut proportionally pairs well with either looser or slim fitting tops and flat or heeled shoes. This style is a go-to for its versatility.
Skinny
Skinny jeans are figure hugging from the waist and continue their tight fit down to the ankles. Skinny jeans are the perfect option for when you want to show off your figure – great for all body types! A beloved favorite for years, skinnies are great in dark washes for business casual looks or nights out, or opt for lighter washes or distressed styles for casual occasions. If your closet is full of the classic blue wash opt for a colored style to spice up your wardrobe.
Take the dread out of jeans shopping by letting your stylist pick out the best fitting pairs for you!
