07 Jan Get back to the basics: Must-have closet staples
Ringing in a new year means starting fresh with fashion. But before you clean out your closet, let’s review the wardrobe basics every girl needs.
Basic Wash Skinny Jeans
If you could only have one pair of jeans (we shutter at the notion), these would be it. The right fitting skinnies are the perfect base layer for almost any occasion from the most casual to night out, and with any style from classic to boho. If your skinnies happen to be ankle length, you’re ahead of the game.
Black Leather Jacket
A black leather jacket – and we’re not talking about one from the 80’s – will add instant style to the most basic of base layers. T-shirt and jeans? Add a leather jacket. LBD? Add a leather jacket. Black trousers and white button down? Add a leather jacket. You get the picture. If you insist on keeping your “vintage” number, a few simple tweaks could bring it into the proper decade. Ask your stylist for advise.
Fitted Turtleneck
This classic piece is one of fall’s most popular basics and is a great substitute to the basic button down or t-shirt in colder months.
Gray and Black Pencil Skirt
Everyone has black but adding the gray creates a completely different look even if all other pieces stay constant. We suggest a basic with a bit of structure or interest like these Nicole Miller options. As with any basic item in your closet, fit and quality are key.
Camel Sweater
Camel is a color that we venture to say will never go out of style. While it’s a bit unorthodox for a basic piece, it is definitely a closet staple and is a fool-proof way to add style to any basic bottom.
White Skinny Jeans
Since we are on the topic of unorthodox, white skinnies are another “up your style game” item. Picture pairing your camel sweater with white skinnies in winter. Whaaaaat? People will most definitely talk.
The LBD
No explanation needed.
Contemporary Cut or Fitted Blazer
Not just any blazer will do, ladies. This one needs to be fresh and updated in order for it to accomplish it’s style mission. Invest well and this one will last you another decade.
White Button-Down
A crisp white button down the perfect layering piece under sweaters, jackets, blazers or as a stand alone. Pair it with jeans, skirts, trousers, leather pants, even shorts. Tie it in a front knot with high-wasted bottoms or wear it un-tucked with a chunky statement necklace. The possibilities are endless.
Black Pencil Trousers
Yes, you read that right. Pencil trousers were in vogue in the 60’s and they still are today. Push the traditional pair to the side and make these babies your go-to.
White T-Shirt
Think Jennifer Aniston here. A nice, classic white tee-shirt is an effortless way to look chic and show off statement accessories. Once again, we can’t emphasize enough the importance of fit and quality here. Try a front tuck to make this simple look a little more interesting.
Nude Underpinning
We strongly believe in the right undergarments, and a nude smooth tank is a great place to start. It helps to hide undergarments, smooths out trouble areas and adds a layer of warmth in cooler months.
Accessories
Whether your taste calls for gold or silver, or a combination or both, here are the basic accessories that are a simple addition to any outfit. Go ahead and add a brown belt to the list while you’re at it.
